Savitri Gupta, a 40-year-old housewife from a well-to-do family at Preet Vihar in East Delhi, should thank one of her neighbours for being alive today. It was on his advice that Gupta, who had withdrawn into a shell, was finally taken to a psychiatrist six months ago. She was found to be suffering from severe depression and was on the verge of committing suicide. The treatment brought her back to normalcy, much to the relief of her husband and in-laws who had misjudged her listlessness as a ploy to avoid the everyday grind of household chores.

Sangeeta Pokhriyal, 36, who lived just a kilometre away in the neighbouring locality of Surajmal Vihar, wasn’t so lucky. Last week she committed suicide after strangling her six year-old daughter. She was said to be suffering from severe depression.

Pokhriyal is among the thousands of victims of depression who die, or at the very least, lead disturbed, diminished lives. Indeed, it’s estimated that severe depression accounts for nearly 8,50,000 deaths globally every year.

A recent study in the BMC Medicine Journal, covering 18 nations, showed that nearly 121 million people are suffering from depression at present. The study, which included data gathered from Pondicherry, extrapolated that nearly 9 per cent of Indians suffer from moderate to severe forms of depression.

Though most psychiatrists in India question this extrapolation, they admit the data are quite close to that thrown up by earlier studies, which indicated that nearly 6 to 8 per cent of Indians suffer from moderate to severe forms of depression at any given time.

Dr B.M. Suresh, a clinical psychiatrist at the Bangalore-based National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (Nimhans), who has co-authored research papers on the prevalence of mental disorders in the country, says 20 to 30 per cent of Indians run the risk of a bout of depression in their lifetime. “As the life expectancy increases the incidence of depression is bound to go up,” says Dr Suresh, who, however, holds that Pondicherry cannot serve as a representative sample as the Union territory has unusually high levels of alcoholism and very high suicide rates.

Depression manifests itself in different ways. Some feel sad, others become aggressive. While some lose their appetite, others binge eat. Some may have disturbed sleep and others may find it hard to stay awake. Social withdrawal, diminished sex drive, suicidal tendencies and lack of concentration are some other telltale symptoms (see box).

The good news is that depression can be treated. “Whatever be the symptoms, it’s possible to treat depression by simply bringing the levels of a brain chemical — serotonin — back to normal,” says Dr Om Prakash, associate professor of psychiatry at the Institute of Human Behaviour and Allied Sciences in Delhi, who treated Gupta.

The treatment is not expensive either. The most commonly used antidepressant — fluoxetine — costs just a few rupees, says Dr Prakash.

What worries experts is not so much the number of people suffering but the fact that very few of them receive treatment. “It doesn’t matter whether 6 per cent or 9 per cent of Indians suffer from depression. The fact is, 80 per cent or more people suffering from moderate to severe depression in this country receive no treatment or counselling,” says Dr K.S. Shaji, head of psychiatry at the Thrissur Medical College in Kerala.

If treated, depression can be cured in six months. Even in the case of people who haven’t been treated, it may vanish in one year to 18 months, says Dr Sanjay Pattanayak of Vidyasagar Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences, in New Delhi. But if left untreated, the chance of recurrence is very high.

One reason many patients don’t receive the treatment they need is that there simply aren’t enough psychiatrists. At present India has only 4,000 psychiatrists for a population of 120 crore, that is, there is one psychiatrist for every 3,00,000 people. As compared to this, the US has 30,000 practising psychiatrists for a population of 30 crore. “Besides, nearly 90 per cent of Indian psychiatrists practise in the metros and big cities. Most districts don’t have a single psychiatrist,” points out Dr Shaji. In the smaller states there may be just one or two psychiatrists, adds Dr Prakash. For example, while Uttarakhand has one psychiatrist, Sikkim, which has the highest suicide rate in the country, has two. Even a relatively big state like Orissa has just six psychiatrists — four in Bhubaneswar and two in Cuttack.

Experts say that paucity of psychiatrists apart, mental health services in the country are plagued by a multitude of problems. First of all, it has never been a priority area for successive governments at the Centre and the states. “A mere Rs 89 crore was allocated for mental healthcare in the 10th Five Year Plan. Though it was increased to Rs 1,000 crore in the ongoing 11th Plan, this too is woefully inadequate,” says Dr Suresh.

The Medical Council of India (MCI), which sets the curriculum for medicine courses in the country, too has not made psychiatry a part of the undergraduate syllabus. After much prodding from the psychiatric community, the MCI recently made it a two-week elective to be undertaken during internship before they get the degree. This is not enough, say experts. “In the UK, all medical undergraduate students have to spend three months each in medicine, surgery and psychiatry as interns before they pass out,” points out Dr Suresh.

Psychiatrists also feel that general practitioners should be sensitised about psychiatric disorders. “I fail to understand why a GP — who is comfortable with prescribing drugs for hypertension or diabetes or even cardiovascular diseases — does not prescribe medicines for depression,” says Dr Prakash.

Indeed, more often than not, when a person suffering from depression goes to a GP, he or she is given multi-vitamin pills or iron tonics to “take care of the lethargy or low energy”. What they fail to understand is these are physical manifestations of a mental problem, says Dr Prakash, and unless the root cause is addressed they will never go away.

There is some glimmer of hope, however. In certain states, non-government initiatives to treat mental disorders are coming up. These organisations screen the rural population for psychological problems and offer medical help and counselling. For example, Sangath, an NGO in Goa, is training a large number of health volunteers who work with medical staff in state-run primary healthcare centres in identifying those who need psychiatric help.

In Kerala, two organisations — Mehac Foundation and Mental Health Action Trust (MHAT) — have set up a number of free clinics in rural areas. MHAT, which operates in three northern Kerala districts, has 26 rural clinics and treats more than 1,000 patients a month. “Reaching out to the patients and their families is important as they refuse to come for treatment because of the social stigma attached to psychiatric illnesses,” says Dr Manoj Kumar, a psychiatrist who founded MHAT.

“Of course, our work is only a drop in the ocean,” Dr Kumar says.

That maybe so. But it is certainly worth emulating to contain the burgeoning problem of depression in the country.

Aries
Aries is the youngest sign in the zodiac. There is a reason the sign is represented by a ram—Aries are strong (and strong-willed), vibrant, enthusiastic, and competitive. They thrive in commission-based jobs, especially if there is a bonus involved. Due to their bravery (and their impulsivity), they are the heroes of our lives—the police officers and firefighters. They are excellent promoters and may find the world of advertising and public relations appeals to their outgoing nature. Best jobs: entrepreneur, soldier, rescue worker; work well in the fields of government and politics, television, and recreation.

Taurus
One of the things a Taurus enjoys most is stability. They will work very hard for certain guarantees—good benefits, vacation time, salary, job security. Determined, patient, honest, and methodical, they are excellent team members and extremely dependable. Taurians have a fondness for beautiful things and love working with flowers, food, jewelry, and luxury items. They are also known for their clear, strong voices and do well as an announcer, public speaker, or receptionist. Best jobs: accountant, educator, engineer, lawyer, designer, landscaper, chef.

Gemini
Want to make a Gemini happy? Give her plenty to do and make it intellectually stimulating. Remember that Geminis are twins, which means you have to engage two people, so they need to have a lot going on and like fast-paced, pressured environments. They won’t survive long doing tedious or repetitive work. Jobs that require travel are perfect, as are jobs that require social networking. Geminis are optimistic and full of energy—they should be encouraged to let go and express themselves rather than be confined to traditional rules. Best jobs: stockbroker, switchboard operator, technical support, teacher, architect, machine operator, rescue worker.

Cancer
Cancer is the mother of the zodiac (Capricorn is the father), so these sensitive types do well in jobs that require nurturing or taking care of things. However, this isn’t just about working with children or puppies; Cancerians make excellent executives, much like a multi-tasking mom who’s in charge. Cancerians give great advice and are very protective. They handle responsibility with ease and are imaginative problem solvers. Best jobs: gardener, social worker, childcare, human resources, lawyer, teacher, CEO, soldier.

Leo
Nothing like a mighty lion to lead your company into success and high profits. Fearless, inspiring, and independent, Leos work best when they are in the spotlight and love jobs that bring status and power. They can be high-maintenance and disruptive to a team environment, but their charm usually wins everyone over in the end. Not to be micro-managed, Leos possess spontaneity and ingenuity and do well when encouraged to lead instead of follow. Best jobs: CEO, performer, tour guide, real estate agent, interior decorator, fashion designer, government, saleperson.

Virgo
Virgos are known for their perfectionism and do very well in detailed-oriented professions. They remember things, excel at abstract thinking, and are very tidy and neat. Many Virgos do well in service-type jobs—you would be very happy with a Virgo manicurist or server (plus Virgos tend to make more money when working for tips). Writing, research, and statistics come easy to the meticulous Virgo brain. They are also easy to get along with as they are generally very cheerful. Many Virgos have a knack for languages. Best jobs: editor/writer, teacher, critic, technician, translator, detective, statistician.

Libra
Libras—what would we do without them? They are good-looking and charming, gracious and entertaining. Their cooperative nature makes them excellent ambassadors and team leaders. If you ever have to deal with customer service over the phone, it will go much smoother if the operator is a Libra. More so than any sign, Libras are people people. They are not the type to slave away in some dark room; they thrive in buzzing, social environments. Many Libras gravitate toward the arts and will most likely be the lead singer of a band, interacting with the audience, rather than a brooding songwriter. Best jobs: diplomat, dancer, salesperson, host, negotiator, travel agent, supervisor.

Scorpio
Intense—that’s what they are. Need a bomb diffused? How about complicated brain surgery? Trust me, you want a Scorpio for the job. Scorpios are able to block out distractions, concentrate, and focus like a laser beam. They are curious and are often drawn to mysteries—you would never want to be cross-examined or interrogated by a Scoripo for they are not only intimidating, but also very intuitive. Scorpios are also drawn to the abnormal and they like to know what makes things tick. (Think Fox Mulder on The X-Files.) Just don’t hover around them—they need their independence and their employer’s trust. Best jobs: detective, lawyer, educator, scientist, surgeon, physicist.

Sagittarius
Sagittarians are ethical, full of energy, and rather philosophical. They are excellent decision-makers and make fair and easygoing bosses. Many Sagittarians are spiritual, which can translate well into careers involving the environment, animals, and counseling, as well as religion. They also love to travel and be outdoors. Outgoing and fun-loving, they are likable and witty coworkers who can defuse tense situations with humor and tact. They will not be tied down or bothered with the little details. Routine kills their spirit. Best jobs: minister, animal trainer, editor, public relations, coach, and anything having to do with travel.

Capricorn
Capricorns are very ambitious and need challenges to be happy. Just like the mountain goat climbs on the tiniest crags to get to the top, Capricorns are determined and persistent—they will do what whatever it takes. Most are responsible and conscientious; many enjoy power. They run a tight ship—they will enforce rules and keep everyone on schedule. If you need something done right (and to exact standards), look no further than a Capricorn. They also tend to be workaholics. Best jobs: manager, administrator, editor, banker, IT, and anything science-related.

Aquarius
The quality that sets Aquarians apart from everyone else is their humanitarian nature (it’s also why they are flighty in matters of the heart, but that’s another story). They love to explore avant-garde ideas and have a curious and adventurous nature. They are the most likely to have an unconventional job, maybe even one of their making. They will rebel against corporate environments, needing freedom of thought and movement. They will not be satisfied doing things the same way they have always been done. If you need a fresh approach, an Aquarius will not let you down. Best jobs: scientist (if they can explore new theories), inventor, organic farmer, aviator, designer, musician.

Pisces
Pisces is the oldest sign in the zodiac and many Pisceans have that “old soul” feel about them. The key words here are creative and passionate. They excel in the traditional arts (music, dance, photography). Pisceans are also highly intuitive. If your stylist is a Pisces, she will not only give you a modern and unique haircut; she will also give you the haircut that fits you best. Many astrologers and tarot practitioners are Pisces. Their intuition also helps in fields that require compassion. Best jobs: artist, nurse, physical therapist, philanthropist, veterinarian, psychologist.

If you are just starting out in the working work or looking to change careers, you don’t need to take a test or consult a career professional—just look to the stars.

TLD – Top Level Domains

There are three types of top-level domains that are classified by the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) which I’ve described below. TLD – These are the most common extensions that you’re probably familiar with. They are made up of .COM, .NET & .ORG domains.
ccTLD - These are country code domain name extensions and they are generally made up of 2 characters. Some of the ccTLD extensions that you’re probably familiar with are .US for United States, .CA for Canada, .JP for Japan and .CN for China.
gTLD - These are generic TLDs and are generally made up of 3 or more letters. Some of the gTLD domain extensions that you may be familiar with are .BIZ, .INFO, .NAME & .MOBI.

Domain Extension Meanings

Below you’ll find some of the more popular domain extensions and the domain extension meaning. .COM (Commercial) – Generally intended for commercial use. By far the most recognized domain name extension.
.NET (Network) – This was originally intended for network oriented sites such as internet service providers. This definitely isn’t the case any longer. People will register .NET domains for commercial use, generally if the .COM extension isn’t available or if they’d like to protect their main .COM domain by registering all available extensions.
.ORG (Organization) – This domain extension was originally intended for non-profit or trade organizations. Again, this is no longer the case and is generally registered by anyone looking to protect their main domain by registering all available domain extensions or simply because a better extension isn’t available for registration.
.BIZ (Business) – This is a gTLD that is generally registered to classify their website as a business. Although it’s not a commonly recognized extension, I feel that it’s a great alternative if the .COM extension isn’t available.
.US (United States) – This ccTLD generally refers to US based companies. Although the domain has been out for quite some time now it’s possible to find some very good domain names with this extension.
.INFO (Informational) – This gTLD is generally used as an extension for informational websites. I believe that other than .COM, .NET & .ORG, it’s the most popular domain extension used. If you are developing an informational website it’s definitely a domain extension that I’d register.
.MOBI (Mobile) – This domain extension, as of this writing, is fairly new. Although majority of the domain name owners registered their domain name with the .MOBI domain name to protect their brand, it is primarily reserved for website built for displaying on mobile devices.
.TV (Television) – In my opinion it’s used primarily for media, primarily video, related websites.
.WS (Website) – This is actually a ccTLD for Western Samoa but was converted to a domain extension commonly used as an acronym for ‘website’. Although it seems that it would be a great extension I don’t feel that it really ever took off and you can find very good domains available with the .WS extension.
.ME (ME) – This is the newest domain, as of this writing. It was originally the ccTLD of Montenegro but would generally be used for personal related websites such as family websites or blogs another option would be to pose your resume or even artwork that you may have done. The other use would be to create a very memorable personal email address.
.NAME (NAME) – This is a gTLD that’s intended for personal use. You’ll find that this extension is used for personal / family websites or simply used for name related email addresses.
.CA (Canada) – This is a ccTLD that is generally reserved for Canadian based businesses.
.CO.UK (United Kingdom) – This country code domain is generally reserved for commercial related websites based in the United Kingdom. Although it’s not restricted to just UK based business, I see very little value in registering the domain extension unless you plan on doing some sort of business in the UK.
.CN (China) – This is the ccTLD for China. This domain is not restricted to companies based in China and can basically be registered by anyone that would like a .CN extension.
.IN (India) – This is the ccTLD for India.

Homeopathic Prophylaxis for Childhood Diseases
an alternative to allopathic vaccinations

Mikhail E. W. Plettner, Ph.D., M.Sc., L.Ac.

While no medicine can guarantee 100 percent immunity, a century of medical literature reveals that the following remedies are as effective in conferring immunity as anything developed in allopathic medicine. They may be taken for general immunization or used to increase immune response during seasons of high risk.
This protocol was developed and used successfully on numerous patients for four decades by Francisco X. Eizayaga, M.D, of Buenos Aires. The remedies listed below are the ones that have been reported useful in homeopathic literature.
Specific Instructions for Developing Enhanced Immunity
1. In general, nosodes (which are underlined below ), provide very specific protection. These, however, can be difficult to find. Give your child a 200c potency of the remedy you select for three successive days. Only one remedy may be given at a time, and not more than one disease may be immunized for each week. You may require the assistance of a trained homeopathic physician in choosing or obtaining some of these remedies.
2. Avoid giving the child coffee or strong tea as caffeine will antidote homeopathic remedies. Avoid camphor (either inhalation or contact) as it will also antidote homeopathics. Menthol, eucalyptus, and other potent aromatics should be avoided for several weeks until antibody levels have built up as these substances also have the potential to antidote the immune provoking action of these homeopathic remedies.
3. The remedy is best taken first thing in the morning or last thing in the evening just before bedtime. Place drops or pellets on or under the tongue. It is important for the mouth to be naturally clean for a homeopathic remedy to be effective. Take nothing by mouth 10 minutes before or after taking a remedy (not even water). It is recommended that the remedy be taken at least 1/2 an hour before or 1 hour after meals. First thing in the morning is preferable for convenience and effectiveness.
4. While homeopathic immunizations have been known to be effective for as long as ten years, it is not easy for a parent to determine how long increased immunity will last in each case. Therefore, it is recommended that your child be given the appropriate homeopathic remedy every 2 – 4 years depending upon his general health.
5. Children who have not been immunized in the above fashion or need to enhance their immunity for other reasons may take the 30c potency of the selected remedy every other day during periods when contagion is more likely.

Disorders and their Prophylactic Remedies
Chicken Pox Antimonium tart., Pulsatilla, Rhus tox.
Cholera Arsenicum alb., Choleratoxinum , Cuprum ac., Veratrum alb.
Diphtheria Apis, Mercurius cyan., Diphtherinum
Hydrophobia/ Rabies Hydrophobinum, Lyssinum, Stramonium
Influenza & Colds Psorinum 200c given in the Fall before it becomes cold will strengthen the system against cold and flu virus; Influenzinum et Baccilinum 200c (from Nelson’s Pharmacy, London) every 3-4 weeks during flu season greatly reduces the incidence of colds and influenza; Ocilloccocinum, 10 pellets twice a day given at the first sign of a cold or flu will often abort the infection.
Measles Aconitum nap., Arsenicum alb., Morbillinum, Pulsatilla, Varicellinium
Mumps Parotidinum, Pilocarpine, Trifolium rep.
Pertussis/ Whooping Cough Cuprum met., Drosera, Vaccinum, Pertussinum
Pneumonia - Pneumococcinum
Polio Carbolic ac., Lathyrus sat. Physostigma,, Polio (mixed nosode), Polio (Salk)
Rubella / German measles Pulsatilla, Rubella nosode
Small Pox Antimonium tart., Hydrastis, Kali cyan., Variolinum
Tetanus Ledum pal., Thuja, Tetanotoxinum; it is often recommended that the allopathic immunization be given instead as it produces vary few problems
Tonsillitis/ Quinsy- Barita carbonica 30c given when inflammation threatens will abort the development of the inflammation

When Allopathic Vaccination Cannot Be Avoided

The following procedure may be used to reduce the undesirable side-effects of such vaccinations.

1. Immediately after vaccination, give Aconitum nap. 30c, twice a day for three days.
2. After Aconitum give Thuja 30c, twice a day for 4 days.
3. Two to four weeks after vaccination, a single dose of the nosode made from the “immunizing” agent may be given in the 200c potency if this is available.

The timer has been set for Feluda’s next screen outing, and Royal Bengal Rahasya (The Royal Bengal Mystery) may just be the most complicated, high-key case that Sandip Ray will have dealt with till now.

For one, it has lots of jungle and wildlife — a man-eating Royal Bengal Tiger on the loose no less. Second, Shree Venkatesh Films has come on board to up the tempo of Brand Feluda. Third, because Sandip feels Royal Bengal is more “cerebral, challenging and complex” than any of the other stories (Bombaiyer Bombete, Kailase Kelenkari, Tintorettor Jishu and Gorosthanay Sabdhaan) he has worked on so far.

“Royal Bengal Rahasya is a personal favourite. It has been there on my mind for a long time. It’s a tamper-proof story, a ready-made script…. I felt Gorosthanay was too verbose but since people have accepted it, I thought we could go for something more cerebral than that. Royal Bengal Rahasya is very exciting, content-wise and also visually,” says Sandip.

Though he was planning for Joto Kando Kathmandute, Sandip finally abandoned it as he feels the Nepal capital no more has “that dazzle”, of which his father Satyajit Ray wrote about. Also, logistics. “The entire equipment set would have to be taken via road since we wouldn’t get anything there. So we thought of considering something more convenient,” he adds.

His dream combo

Royal Bengal Rahasya is set in the forests of Dooars where Feluda arrives to crack a riddle, hinting at a treasure trail, on the invitation of a zamindar, who’s a shikari and wildlife writer. For many Feluda fans, including Topshe in the story, the icing on the cake is a hair-raising face-off between Feluda and a Royal Bengal tiger with a taste for humans. But the filmmaker doesn’t want to reveal how he is going about recreating it just yet. Computer graphics, special footage… all options are being considered. “Today’s children are used to The Chronicles of Narnia. So we can’t fool them with dated stuff,” he says.

Large chunks of the film will be shot in Dhenkanal in Orissa and north Bengal. And since jungle it is, the most excited member in the team currently is the sleuth himself — Sabyasachi Chakraborty.

“As a member of the state wildlife board, Benu (Sabyasachi) is well-versed with the rules and regulations, and we will go by what he says,” smiles Sandip.

Bhaswar chats with Sabyasachi and Shaheb. (Aranya Sen)

For Sabyasachi, wilderness and Feluda is a “dream combo”. “I am very happy!” says the wildlife enthusiast and photographer, who will help out with the logistics. “But you know shooting in national parks and sanctuaries is harmful for the eco-system if you don’t do it with care. In fact, I had raised this issue at a wildlife board meeting… to stop shooting in these sites, but let’s see. Once Babuda (Sandip) decides on the spot, we will work around it,” he says.

Burning bright

Tiger or no tiger, the makers are promising a visual treat like never before. Co-producers Shree Venkatesh Films and Surinder Films are thinking really big. Think, er, Harry Potter.

“Feluda is a brand and we want to be associated with it. We are going to market the film in a huge way. Since Feluda is a series, it has the potential to be turned into something like the Harry Potter series…. We haven’t fixed a budget yet but we will spend whatever is needed to make it a great film. For instance, we are going to use VFX in this movie, something that has never been done in Tollywood before,” says Mahendra Soni of Shree Venkatesh. That’s not all. Planning is on for a near-and-far release — the US, UK and pan-India.

“We have been wanting to work with Sandipda for long. We had first approached him about 10 years ago, much before the Feluda films started, but it didn’t work out then,” adds Soni.

“I have been getting feelers from Venkatesh for quite some time; they came to me with a two-film offer — one Feluda and one non-Feluda. I said let’s do a Feluda first and we will take it from there,” says Sandip.

New players

Among the new entrants in the Feluda team is TV star Bhaswar Chatterjee, who plays the suspected victim of the tiger on the prowl. “I am nervous and excited,” he says.

The trio of Sabyasachi, Shaheb ‘Topshe’ Bhattacharya and Bibhu ‘Jatayu’ Bhattacharya apart, there’s Biplab Chatterjee, Basudeb Mukherji, Debesh Roy Chowdhury, Paran Bandopadhyay and Sanjib Sarkar in the cast.

Sandip, meanwhile, is not keen on taking Parambrata Chattopadhyay back as Topshe. He had picked Shaheb for Gorosthanay, when Parambrata left for studies in the UK two years ago.

“Many people have asked me about this but I don’t want to. Since the change we made has worked, I want to stick to it. Besides, I am happy with Shaheb’s work,” he says.

The youngest member in the cast, Shaheb is cautious about his next step. “People have accepted me in Gorosthanay Sabdhaan. Now I have to take it to the next level. This time I will try to do a few different things but of course with the director’s permission.”

Adieu? Not yet

Royal Bengal Rahasya may not be the last Feluda film after all, despite concerns of age catching up with Sabyasachi.

“People have accepted Gorosthanay, so (Sabyasachi’s) age does not seem to be a problem. And frankly speaking, there’s nobody else I can cast as Feluda. I would definitely want to do one more with him,” says Sandip.

Sabyasachi, on his part, would like to go on playing Feluda till “all my teeth are gone”. “I would do Feluda as long as the audience, my director and the producer want, but of course before I become Felukaku!” he quips.
